Crestline Drive Traffic Calming

The City of Lawrence is committed to enhancing the safety of our neighborhood streets. As part of the Neighborhood Traffic Management Program (NTMP), we’re focusing on Crestline Drive to address concerns about speeding and cut-through traffic.

Why Crestline Drive?

Recent traffic studies have shown that vehicles on Crestline Drive often exceed the posted speed limit of 30 mph, with drivers averaging around 38 mph. These speeds pose risks to pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers.

Given its proximity to schools and residential areas, it’s crucial to implement measures that ensure the safety of all road users.

Proposed Solution – Speed Cushions

To mitigate speeding and improve safety, the City is proposing the installation of speed cushions—raised areas of pavement designed to slow down traffic without hindering emergency vehicles or buses. These measures aim to reduce vehicle speeds while maintaining smooth traffic flow.

The map below illustrates the proposed locations for the speed cushions along Crestline Drive. These locations have been selected based on traffic data and community feedback.

Share Your Feedback

The City hosted a feedback form to gather thoughts and suggestions regarding the proposed traffic calming measures on Crestline Drive. The feedback form was open through July 13, 2025.

Next Steps for Traffic Calming

The Neighborhood Traffic Management Team will present the feedback results and study findings to the City Commission on August 5th, 2025. Pending approval from the City Commission, construction on Crestline Dr. would begin in Summer 2026.
