RE:

Signs of Community Interest Request, “Walk [Your] City”

Background

The KU Biodiversity Institute & Natural History Museum and The Commons at the University of Kansas are partnering on a “Walk [Your City]” promotion.  The applicants are requesting permission to display temporary directional signs at various locations to promote the event which takes place from September 30 through December 7, 2015.  The proposed signs are one square foot in area each with graphics that direct pedestrians to public facilities such as the Lawrence Public Library or to centers of activity such as downtown (see attached map).  Sign graphics will include a directional arrow, an estimated walk time to a destination, a QR code to assist with tracking, and a brief purpose statement.

Between two and four signs will be displayed at each of 17 locations around downtown, Old West Lawrence, and the University of Kansas campus.  Signs will be attached to 2”x2” posts embedded approximately one foot into the ground, within the City right of way area.  The applicants will approach the University of Kansas separately for permission to display signs on campus.

Action

Approve as “Signs of Community Interest” a request from the KU Biodiversity Institute & Natural History Museum and The Commons at the University of Kansas to place signs at various locations from September 30 through December 7, 2015 as part of a “Walk [Your City]” promotion.
