Wakarusa WWTP Site Fill and E1600/N1175 Road Improvements – UT1304-Contract 3

The Department of Utilities general contractor King’s Construction has completed the road improvements to 41st Street (N1175 Rd) and O’Connell Rd (E1600 Rd) south of the Wakarusa River as shown on the attached map. These roads provide access to the future Wakarusa Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), which is currently under construction. The construction contract also included over 450,000 cubic yards of fill placed at the WWTP site in Fall 2014 to allow time for settlement and compaction ahead of the WWTP building construction.

King’s was given Notice to Proceed on July 16, 2014 with a final completion date of December 19, 2014. The completion date was delayed due to design revisions and permitting. King’s completed all work within the contracted scope and the project met all requirements for final completion on July 10, 2015.

The project was awarded to King’s Construction in the amount of $5,086,413.65 and change orders reduced the total construction cost to $4,746,495.96, which results in a credit of $339,917.69 back to the UT1304 project. The change orders represented a credit of 6.7% of the original bid construction cost.

Sports Pavilion Lawrence – Economic Impact of Tournaments

Over the past eight months Parks & Recreation Department staff have worked with tournament directors and CVB staff to quantify the economic impact of tournaments held at the Sports Pavilion Lawrence facility. Tournament directors have provided information on the number of teams, the average number of people associated with each team, and how many teams are spending the night in Lawrence for each event. With the help of CVB staff, the attached spreadsheet begins to delineate estimated economic impact of the first 29 events held at the facility this year (estimated at $4.4 million dollars). Over the next few months staff will work to further refine the process used for collecting information, as we are scheduled to host 9 -10 more events in 2015.

Going forward, this type of information will also be collected for swim meets, softball baseball, soccer and golf tournaments as well as special events that bring large numbers of people to Lawrence.
