RE:

2014 Light the Night Leukemia Walk – Saturday, September 20, 2014

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has applied for a street event permit for The 2014 Light the Night Leukemia Walk – Saturday, September 20, 2014 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., benefitting Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The walk would begin at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Massachusetts Street adjacent to South Park. Participants would walk north on Massachusetts Street to 11th Street, then west to Vermont Street, then north on Vermont Street to 9th Street, then east to New Hampshire Street, then south on New Hampshire Street to 11th Street, then west to Massachusetts Street, then south on Massachusetts Street back to South Park (see attached map). The walkers will be in one group and have police escort in front and behind, only having to close intersections as they pass through. It is anticipated that the entire route will take one hour (see police operations plan)

This date is also a KU home football game (band day and family day) the time of the game has yet to be announced. Staff feels that this route will have little to no impact on game day traffic downtown. The police department has coordinated traffic control for similar routes downtown and has developed a plan that requires little to no police resources for traffic control. All barricades and staff will be solely provided by the applicant.
