Agenda Item – Project UT1205 South Lawrence Trafficway Change Order #6 – 12” Water Main Relocation

 

Background

The South Lawrence Trafficway is currently under construction by Emery Sapp & Sons the general contractor for the Kansas Department of Transportation.

 

Required watermain and sanitary sewer relocations in the area of 31st and Haskell were designed and bid as part of the KDOT SLT project due to the required construction sequencing in this area. The construction of these relocations will be paid for by the City of Lawrence.

 

Project Status

During the construction of the 12” watermain located northwest of 31st and Haskell (see attached map), a 4” Black Hills Energy gas main was encountered.  This gas line was relocated as part of the SLT relocations, and was installed in such a way that it conflicted with the alignment of the relocated waterline.

 

Due to scheduling conflicts, Black Hills could not relocate the gas line in a timely manner that wouldn’t delay SLT construction.  The resolution of this conflict was to hand dig around the gas line, and shift it as far west as possible in order to obtain horizontal separation between the gas line and the watermain. Due to hand digging around this gas line, Emery Sapp is requesting additional costs associated with this work.  As outlined in the attached letter from ESS, they have provided a cost of $29,225.30 for the performed work.  Black Hills Energy has committed to paying for half of these incurred costs ($14,612.65).

Current Contract Total

   $946,624.51

 

To date cost adjustments are 4.02% of the original contract amount.

 

Action

Authorize the City Manager to execute Change Order #06 to the construction contract with Emery Sapp & Sons for project UT1205, South Lawrence Trafficway Sanitary Sewer and Watermain Relocations increasing the contract amount by $29,225.30.
