City Manager’s Report – All lanes of Iowa Street are now open |
The final phase on the Iowa St. project is now complete and traffic has been restored to all lanes on Bob Billings Parkway and Iowa Street (see photo). Both phases of this project were completed ahead of schedule. The first phase of completing the intersection of Bob Billings Parkway and Iowa was finished two weeks ahead of schedule and the final phase one week ahead of schedule.
We would like to thank the public and The University of Kansas for their patience during the reconstruction. The 61 year old Iowa Street which carries around 39,000 vehicles a day was badly in need of reconstruction (see photos). Some of the improvement to Iowa and Bob Billings include; additional turn lanes in the intersection, sidewalks, a barrier wall, and a center turn lane the entire length of the project (see photos).
We would also like to thank our partners on this project; The University of Kansas, Kansas Department of Transportation, King’s Construction, Permanent Pavement, J. Warren Construction and Twin Traffic as well as many City of Lawrence departments and staff. It was through their efforts that this was a successful project.
The contractor has until December 21, 2013 to complete the final punch list items. City crews will be back in the spring to install a more permanent stripping product once the weather and temperatures allow.
