RE:

Update on Projects UT07010DS Kaw WTP Transmission Main and UT1102KA Kaw WTP Raw Water Intake

Projects UT0701DS Kaw WTP Transmission Main, and UT1102KA Kaw WTP Raw Water Intake, are both scheduled to be bid during October and November with construction commencing at the first of 2014, and being completed during the summer of 2014. See the attached map of the area and proposed project components.

Project UT0701DS consists of approx. 7600 linear feet of 36” diameter water transmission main routed from the Kaw Water Treatment Plant to a point just south of N 3rd Street and Industrial Lane. This includes a 2300 linear foot, directionally drilled crossing of the Kansas River.

Project UT1102KA includes the construction of a new surface water intake crib and 42” diameter pipe, removal of the two (2) abandoned intake structures, modifications to the existing operational intake to raise it and provide for sand/sediment mitigation, and dredging in the vicinity of the existing operational intake.

The construction activities of both projects will impact Burcham Park. Park access will be maintained, and the work areas will be controlled with temporary fencing. I have met with representatives of the Pinckney Neighborhood Association, University of Kansas Athletics and Crew team, and Bowersock Mills & Power to advise them of the pending construction and coordinate any necessary access. A temporary road will be provided around the Kaw Intake construction area for access to the KU Boathouse and Burcham Park Shelter area. Lowering of the mill pond approx. 2 feet to facilitate the modifications to the existing intake has been discussed with Bowersock, and this will be coordinated as the contractor reaches that point of work in early summer 2014. Construction traffic will be routed from 6th Street north on Maine to 2nd Street avoiding the smaller residential streets.

Parks and Recreation staff will be assisting with tree trimming in the area of the temporary road, as well as the temporary removal of the playground equipment within the construction area.

Staff and the design consultants, Burns & McDonnell on UT0701DS and Black & Veatch on UT1102KA, are currently finalizing plans and specifications for bidding, acquiring remaining permits and negotiating for temporary construction easements. It is anticipated these projects will be presented to the City Commission during October to request bid dates.

Thank you for your assistance. Please advise if you have any questions.
