Lawrence Police Foundation raises funds for AED purchases

The Lawrence Police Foundation was established in 2011 to support, assist, and encourage the Lawrence Police Department with funding and collaboration in their projects, research studies, equipment needs, and education. On August 23, 2012, the Lawrence Police Foundation sponsored a golf tournament to raise funds for Automated External Defibrillators (AED) to be placed in patrol cars. The money raised at the event, plus an additional donation by a Lawrence citizen, will allow the purchase of eight AEDs. Please see the attached memo for more information.

Wimbledon Drive watermain replacement completed

The Department of Utilities and general contractor Westland Construction have completed replacement of the watermain on Wimbledon Drive from Inverness Drive to Crossgate Drive as shown on the attached map. The project included the replacement of approximately 3,200 lineal feet of 8” ductile iron waterline originally installed in 1982 with 8” PVC pipe. The waterline was installed utilizing trenchless installation methods including pipe bursting and directional drilling in order to minimize the impact of construction activities on affected residents and property owners.

The completion of this project has served to improve the overall water distribution system reliability and reduce operational and maintenance costs. The existing ductile iron watermain was highly deteriorated and prone to failures due to the presence of highly corrosive soils and the original installation condition. City distribution staff had repaired the line 8 times in the last 4 years impacting access along Wimbledon Drive and requiring repeated repair of the street.

Westland Construction was given notice to proceed on May 29, 2012 with a total of 105 calendar days allotted to attain final completion. The contractor was required to be complete with the watermain installation on Wimbledon Drive within 80 calendar days to allow sufficient time for the street to be resurfaced as part of the 2012 microsurfacing contract. Westland Construction completed all work within the contractual timeframe and the project met all requirements for final completion as of September 11, 2012.

The project was awarded to Westland Construction in the amount of $411,985.35 and change orders, to accommodate additional work necessary to successfully complete the project, were executed in the amount of $7,543.08 for a total construction cost of $419,528.43. This final as-constructed cost equates to approximately $132/lineal foot and change orders represented less than 2% of the original bid project cost.
