CITY MANAGER’S REPORT

Week ending January 5, 2007

Professional Development Training for First Time Supervisors

The Management Team met on November 15, 2006 to review a draft Professional Development Training program for Directors, Managers and Supervisors. Training Specialist Myra Greenberg developed and presented the program whose goal is to provide leadership and management training (as opposed to technical training) to employees in supervisory positions. The program was developed to respond to the need (identified in the Employee Survey) for improved “leadership and managerial effectiveness.” The City Manager has approved the adoption of KU’s Supervisory Training for Excellence in Performance (STEP) Program (see attached program outline) for first time supervisors. A revised program for current supervisors will be presented at a future Management Team meeting for implementation later this year.

Burcham Park Bank Improvements Completed

The Stormwater Division is finishing up with the second phase of reinforcing the banks at Burcham Park. There were two major spots where the banks had eroded into vertical slopes. The crews spent two days hauling rock from the West 40 facility and placing it along the shore line. Please see the attached photos of the project.

Meadows Place Stormwater Update

The stormwater improvement project at Meadows Place is nearly complete. Most of the excess dirt has been hauled off, and grading and seeding on the west side will be done next spring. Please see the attached photos of the project.

Annual Report on Burials

With the added responsibilities of overseeing the Memorial Park cemetery, Parks & Recreation staff performed approximately twice as many burials in 2006 compared to just two years ago (117 burials in 2004, 235 in 2006). Please see the attached spreadsheet for burial numbers dating all the way back to 1968.

Citizen Satisfaction Survey Update

Staff has begun working with ETC Institute, Inc. to develop and conduct a citizen satisfaction survey. In order to develop the survey instrument, ETC staff will be conducting stakeholder interviews. The goal of these interviews will be to ensure that the issues that are important to decision makers in the City are addressed by the survey questions. In addition to members of the City Commission, ETC will be contacting various advisory board members and other decision makers in the community. The attached letter was mailed to the stakeholders to encourage them to participate in the interviews.
