Residents asked to voluntarily reduce water

Residents asked to voluntarily reduce waterLate this afternoon, the City of Lawrence experienced a break in a 24-inch water main located near the intersection of 23rd St. and Iowa St. This water main supplies water from the Clinton Water Treatment Plant to a large portion of the community. Currently, there is no impact on drinking water service. The City is using a secondary water main to route water around while the repair is being made. Crews will be working through the night to bring the water main back into service.

To help, the City is asking for voluntary reduction in water usage through Friday, July 28, 2023.  Residents can take different actions to reduce water consumption during this time, such as:

  • Limiting outdoor watering
  • Shortening showers
  • Limiting the washing of cars and vehicles
  • Limiting the refilling of pools

The City of Lawrence’s Municipal Services & Operations Department is also working with large water users within the community to reduce their usage during this time.

The City recognizes this is a high demand time for water in the community. However, it is also important with the excessive heat that we all help where possible to allow the City refill water towers overnight, so they are ready for the next day.

The City will notify everyone when the repair is complete. Contact: Michael Leos, Communication & Community Engagement Specialist, Municipal Services & Operations – mleos@lawrenceks.org
