Helpful Hints for Moving
If the end of the semester means a new place to live, a few helpful hints may make your move easier:
HOUSEHOLD ITEMS
Usable items (televisions, furniture, appliances, clothing): don’t discard, share with friends or find a new use.
Bulky items Call City Solid Waste at 832-3032 for a pick up of large items like appliances or couches. Up to 5 auto tires may also be picked up free each year.
Household hazardous waste (paints, solvents, auto fluids, house-hold cleaners) poses a threat to sanitation workers and public health. Do not dispose of these items with weekly trash pickup. Call Waste Reduction and Recycling at 832-3030 to schedule a drop off appointment.
Needing household products? Make an appointment to visit the city Product Reuse facility at 832-3030. Products available for free often include: latex paint, solvents, pest control products, and more.
GOOD NEIGHBOR ORDINANCES
Good habits make good neighbors. Familiarize yourself with Lawrence’s good neighbor ordinances:
Roommates – No more than 3 unrelated persons can reside in one housing unit in a neighborhood zoned single family.
Noise – Music should not be heard outside of your house. It is illegal to play music from a vehicle that can be heard from 50 feet away.
Parking – Do not park on lawns or sidewalks. Vehicles parked on streets must be moved every 48 hours.
UTILITIES
Water Service: transfer or end service by calling 832-7878 or go online to lawreceutilitybilling.org.
PUBLIC TRANSIT
KU and Haskell Indian Nations University students with a valid student ID are eligible to pay a reduced fare of 50 cents.
Unlimited Access – Students who purchase a KU on Wheels bus pass can add a T sticker for $20 for the summer semester.
K-12 students can ride the “T” at a reduced fare of 50 cents. Students in grades 10-12 need to show a valid student ID.
Garage Sale Season
Proper sign placement reduces driving hazards
Warm weather and spring cleaning herald the return of garage sale season. Please follow city code for safe, easy-to-see sign display:
- Signs should be no larger than 4 square feet (2 x 2).
- Do not place signs in the public right-of-way likemedians or the area between the sidewalk and street.
- Do not place signs on city property like utility poles.
- Signs should not be put up before 5:00 p.m. on Friday, and should be taken down by 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
- Signs should be placed on residential streets, not commercial streets like 23rd St, Iowa or Massachusetts
Planning and Development Services department staff may remove improperly placed signs. Call 832-7700 for more information or visit: www.lawrenceks.org/city_code

Help Prevent Deck Fires Practice Safe Grilling
SAFE GRILLING TIPS
- If grilling on a wooden balcony or deck, use an electric grill.
- If grilling over an open flame, move grill off wooden decks and balconies and keep at least 10 feet away from combustible materials.
- Don’t leave cooking unattended.
- Keep children away from grilling area.
- Grill in well ventilated areas to prevent carbon monoxide exposure.
- When finished, allow grill to cool before moving.
- Wet charcoal can spontaneously combust.
New city codes prohibit the use of open flame barbecues on wooden apartment balconies not protected by fire sprinklers. Open flame barbecues include charcoal and propane (LP) gas grills. The storage of propane (LP) grills on balconies is not permitted.
Accidents caused by gas or charcoal grills on apartment balconies can put the lives of an entire building’s occupants at risk of fire.
New rules apply to residential buildings that have three or more attached units. The rules do not apply to concrete or steel balconies or to balconies protected by fire sprinklers.
