1953
Capitol Federal Savings
The year 1953 is considered a milestone in Capitol Federal history, for on May 3, 1953, Capitol Federal expanded its branch network system outside the Topeka area when it opened its Downtown Lawrence office, the Bank’s second branch location. The office’s first branch manager, now-retired Ray Culbertson, led a staff of three employees. As growth of business in the area steadily continued, the office received extensive remodeling and expansion to the east in the early ‘60s. In 1967, Culbertson was assigned to Johnson County, and now-retired Dick Holzmeister was named as the new Lawrence branch manager. On March 18, 1974, the office at Iowa and Harvard opened, and with the transfer of Holzmeister to the new branch, Joe Oberzan became branch manager of the downtown office.
In 1995, Lawrence was the location of another Capitol Federal milestone when the bank opened its 25th office, its first within a retail store. Located inside the SuperTarget store at 3201 Iowa, the Lawrence Target office provides customers with flexible hours and the convenience of banking while shopping. With the success of its in-store offices, Capitol Federal added another branch within the Dillon’s located at 6th and Wakarusa in 1999.
Today, the Lawrence offices are led by Vice President-Branch Manager Deborah Johnston, 11th and Vermont Sts.; Vice President-Branch Manager Joe Oberzan, Iowa and Harvard; Assistant Vice President-Branch Manager Susan Parscal, SuperTarget, 3201 Iowa; and Assistant Vice President-Branch Manager Jenny Morgison, Dillon’s, 6th Street and Wakarusa St. Vice President-Loan Manager Amy Cleavinger supervises the Bank’s Lawrence lending operations from its loan production office at 1026 Westdale Road.
Capitol Federal is proud to be a part of Lawrence history. For more than 50 years, its employees have volunteered and contributed to many organizations to build a stronger community, while continuing to provide the Bank’s customers with the same True Blue® service that is a tradition at Capitol Federal Savings. Congratulations to Lawrence on its Sesquicentennial, a special occasion to reflect on the city’s past, but more importantly, a time for realizing the strength of its people and community as Lawrence moves forward into its future.
