RE:

Traffic Calming on Missouri Street

Background

At the March 7, 2016 Traffic Safety Commission meeting, the Commission heard a request for traffic calming on Missouri Street between 8th Street and 9th Street (see attached).  Missouri Street is classified as a “local” street in a residential area, with a posted speed limit of 25 mph. The City’s Traffic Calming Policy permits traffic calming devices to be placed on local streets if the 85th percentile speed of traffic is 5 mph or greater over the speed limit; or, if the 24-hour 2-way volume of traffic is greater than 1000. Traffic data obtained during January found traffic volumes below 1000 vehicles per day; however, the 85th percentile speed was approximately 35.3 mph; therefore, this street meets the minimum criteria for consideration of traffic calming.

Traffic Safety Commission Action

At the Traffic Safety Commission meeting, two (2) residents addressed the Commission in support of traffic calming on Missouri Street, expressing concern for the safety of children and the difficulty of backing out of driveways. The Commission, on a unanimous vote of 7-0, recommended traffic calming on Missouri Street between 8th Street and 9th Street.
