Chuck,
The BAC unanimously recommends the use of the arrow
markings for Naismith. Compared to
signage, pavement markings create a higher visibility and thus greater
awareness of the likelihood of cyclists on Naismith. BAC would also like to explore the use of
these markings in other retrofit projects, including Lawrence Ave/Princeton
area, as discussed previously. BAC plans
to compile some examples of such installations, including cautionary signage
where appropriate.
BAC further recommends a joint KU/city task force to
coordinate development of bike facilities on and around KU campus, including
but not limited to development of facilities shown on BFM, possible extension
of Ousdahl north onto campus ROW established for that purpose, new
signage/pavement markings and replacement of signage removed during recent road
reconstructions, and study of design solutions for intersections like
19th/Naismith, Naismith/Sunnyside. (Of
course, some of these are KU only, but will be affected by city planning.) Almost 10 years ago, Naismith was identified
as a prime candidate corridor for bike improvements, and it's become clear that
pedestrian facilities are needed, too.
BAC feels that KU and city must work closely to anticipate redevelopment
opportunties and to be prepared to establish such facilities as reconstruction
progresses. Had KU been aware of city's
plans before reconstructing Naismith a few years ago, Naismith might look much
different between 19th and Sunnyside today.
Cheers,
Eric
