Monthly Progress Report 01-03-06


Completed Tasks through December 2005

  • Provided project status update to joint City/County/USD 497 meeting on December 1st. Primary issue was to discuss how important school district boundaries should be when considering the location of the Wakarusa Water Reclamation Facility (WRF).
  • Continued Public Involvement Program. Discussed content for future City/County mailings, Utility inserts, and kiosks locations/content.
  • Developed memorandum determining ultimate build-out capacity of the new WRF. Provided draft memorandum for city staff review.
  • Revised criteria to evaluate sites and process alternatives. Modifications to the original criteria were a result from the input received from Staff and the Public Advisory Committee.
  • Conducted a bus tour of the area generally one mile north and south of the Wakarusa River between Clinton Dam and E 1950 Road. Provided brief summary for those who couldn't attend.

Anticipated Tasks for January 2006

  • Complete preliminary process and site evaluations.
  • Complete Peer Group interviews. Summary of final interview will be submitted to City/PAC.
  • Conduct seminar by Wetland Expert Dr. Robert Kadlec. Seminar will discuss what wetlands can do in Lawrence climate and possibilities of meeting proposed KDHE permit limits.
  • Conduct second PAC meeting to evaluate sites and spatial needs.
  • Complete second Public Meeting to discuss revised criteria to be used in siting process. Meeting will be documented and meeting minutes will be placed on public website.
  • Continue Public Involvement Program. Develop materials for mailings and kiosks.
  • Prepare for February joint City/County/USD 497 meeting to review criteria being considered in the siting process by staff and the PAC.

Actions/Issues

  • Population growth may accelerate need for Wakarusa WRF prior to 2011. Important to maintain project timeline.
  • Actual-to-date engineering is less than expected forecasts due to preliminary process evaluation beginning in December.
