Rules & Regulations

The mission of the Lawrence Transit System is to provide safe, dependable and convenient transportation to destinations within the city limits to the citizens of Lawrence. With this mission in mind, the following rules and regualtions apply.

The following activities are prohibited on the bus:

  • Smoking
  • Eating
  • Drinking, including comsumption of alcohol
  • Running
  • Littering
  • Loud or intrusive use of profanity/obscenities
  • Disorderly conduct, including threatening or harassing behavior to other passengers and/or drivers
  • Conduct that could pose a threat to public safety (exposure to bodily fluids, pathogens)
  • Solicitation for commerical or non-commercial purposes
  • Vandalism, graffiti
  • Taking up more than one seat
  • Placement of feet upon seats
  • Inappropriate/distracting conversation with the driver
  • Listening to electronic equipment without the use of headsets
    • LTS reserves the right to ask any passenger to turn their equipment off for the safety and/or comfort of other riders
  • Remaining on the bus for extended periods with no expectation of departing for a destination
  • Occupying a shelter with no expectation of catching a transit vehicle
  • Sleeping on the bus or in the bus shelters
  • Traveling with pets with the exception of service animals trained to assist individuals with disablilities
  • Opening windows without the permission of the driver
  • Placing hands, arms, heads, or personal belongings outside of the bus

The following carry-on items are prohibited on the bus:

  • Items too large or too numerous to be reasonably controlled, carried, or handled by a passenger
  • Hazardous materials (e.g., car batteries, gasoline cans or other flammable materials)
  • Firearms or other weapons
  • Items that would block the aisle or require the use of an additional seat if the additional seat would deprive a passenger of a seat
  • Strollers and/or shopping carts that cannot be folded and stored safely
  • Open containers of alcoholic beverages, drink, or food

Passengers are required to:

  • Board the vehicle only at the curb via the front door allowing passengers to exit first. The rear door is exit only.
  • Wear shirt and shoes
  • Pay fare upon boarding - cash, punch ticket or pass - for each one-way trip
  • Request a transfer, if needed, upon boarding to complete a one-way trip
  • Remain seated while the vehicle is in motion and:
    • Keep strollers folded up and out of the way of other passengers;
    • Hold small children securely during your trip
    • Keep aisles clear of parcels and packages. Any items brought on board must remain in your complete control
    • If occupancy requires standing, remain behind the white line located at either door of the vehicle and hold onto the stanchions or overhead railings

Consequences:

Passengers who do not follow the regulations are subject to removal from the Lawrence Transit System vehicle.

Violators of these rules and regulations may be subject to suspension from the Lawrence Transit System for a minimum of thirty days.
