Information for Bicyclists
Tips for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.
- Follow the rules of the road and obey all traffic laws.
- Don't run red lights or stop signs.
- Don't ride at night without lights.
- Don't ride on the sidewalk in Downtown.
- Don't ride more than two abreast.
- Think ahead. Ride defensively. Anticipate drivers' actions. Establish eye contact.
- Be visible. Ride clear of the curb and wear bright clothing.
- Ride in a straight line, be consistent in your riding, always look and signal prior to turning, stay at least a car door length away from parked cars.
- Children on bicycles and on foot are often unpredictable in their actions. Expect the unexpected.
- Always ride with the flow of traffic. Motorists aren't looking for bicyclists on the opposite side of the road.
- Yield the right-of-way to pedestrians.
- Keep at least one hand on handle bars at all times.
- Do not ride with headphones. You cannot hear traffic, trains or other warnings from cyclists.
- Parents must educate their children about traffic awareness and safety. Remember, the rules of the road for cyclists are the same as for motorists.
- Be smart. Always wear a proper fitting helmet in good condition. Parents should set a positive example by wearing their helmets. - Front head lamp with white light visible from 500' to be used after dusk.
- Rear red reflector visible from 100' to 600'. In addition a red light which is visible from 500', may be used.
- Reflectorized pedals which are visible front and rear for 200'.
- A brake that will make braked wheel skid on dry, level, clean pavement.
- Bikes may not be ridden on any sidewalk within a business district.
- Ride no more than two abreast.
- Use paths adjacent to roadways when provided and not use the roadway.
- Don't park in the path of pedestrians or vehicles on streets, alleys, or sidewalks. Bicycles must not hinder or restrict access to handrails or ramps.
- Bikes should be parked in bike racks or at parking meter adapters. Bikes should not be attached to a tree, fire hydrant, traffic control device or sign, street light, utility pole or any parking meter.
- Owners may register their bicycles at the police department. Registration of bicycles helps police in locating the rightful owners of lost or stolen bicycles. There is a small fee for registration.
