Information for Bicyclists

Tips for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.

  1. Follow the rules of the road and obey all traffic laws.
    • Don't run red lights or stop signs.
    • Don't ride at night without lights.
    • Don't ride on the sidewalk in Downtown.
    • Don't ride more than two abreast.
  2. Think ahead. Ride defensively. Anticipate drivers' actions. Establish eye contact.
  3. Be visible. Ride clear of the curb and wear bright clothing.
  4. Ride in a straight line, be consistent in your riding, always look and signal prior to turning, stay at least a car door length away from parked cars.
  5. Children on bicycles and on foot are often unpredictable in their actions. Expect the unexpected.
  6. Always ride with the flow of traffic. Motorists aren't looking for bicyclists on the opposite side of the road.
  7. Yield the right-of-way to pedestrians.
  8. Keep at least one hand on handle bars at all times.
  9. Do not ride with headphones. You cannot hear traffic, trains or other warnings from cyclists.
  10. Parents must educate their children about traffic awareness and safety. Remember, the rules of the road for cyclists are the same as for motorists.
  11. Be smart. Always wear a proper fitting helmet in good condition. Parents should set a positive example by wearing their helmets. Watch for details on the annual bike rodeo\helmet giveaway for elementary school students in May sponsored by the Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical Department, City of Lawrence, Douglas County Safe Kids Coalition, Laird Noller Automotive and the generous support of many local businesses and volunteers.
