Dear Lawrence resident;
Lawrence citizens are instrumental in informing the community about issues facing Lawrence. The role individuals play in forming opinions about community issues is very important. In the coming weeks, Lawrence will make decisions about three sales tax proposals – streets and infrastructure and the transit system.
2008 Sales Tax Proposals
Question #1
0.3 percent for streets and infrastructure
A dedicated revenue source for public infrastructure and capital investment including streets, sidewalks, trails, equipment, and storm sewers.
Projects include the North Lawrence Maple Street storm water pump project; the Burroughs Creek rail/trail, fire trucks, substantial additional investments in residential street maintenance and sidewalk gap projects, and the rehabilitation and rebuilding of several major arterial and collector streets.
Question #2
0.2 percent for transit
A special sales tax for public transit operations and capital investment.
With a dedicated funding source, the City will have the resources to merge the transit system with the University of Kansas transit system – ensuring substantial continuing resources to serve both community and student needs in an integrated system.
Question #3
0.05 percent for transit, expanded
A special sales tax for expanded public transit operations and capital investment.
Additional dedicated resources for the transit system will provide for route enhancements and vehicle and facility improvements. Examples include increased bus service frequency on busy routes and alternative fuel buses.
We would like the opportunity to speak with you and your civic or social organization to discuss the issues and answer questions about the November 4 sales tax proposals. We look forward to the opportunity to share information about these important proposals. Please contact us if you are interested in scheduling a meeting or have questions.
Sincerely,
Michael Dever, Mayor |
