N 2nd & Locust reconstruction

Project description

The project will reconstruct North 2nd Street from the Kansas River Bridge to the RR underpass. The road will widen to allow for a left turn lane on N. 2nd Street. The new pavement will be concrete. The project also includes the replacement of the 12” watermain that provides service to N. Lawrence. Storm sewer improvements will also be completed improving drainage in the area. Phase 1 of the project will close N.2nd to north bound traffic. Traffic will be detoured onto Elm Street to 3rd Street and back to North 2nd on Lyon Street. Only a single lane South bound will be opened on N. 2nd.

Phase 2 will allow a single lane south bound and a single lane north bound on N. 2nd.

Project schedule

The project is expected to begin in mid-July.
Phase 1 – is to be completed in November
Phase 2 – the project is expected to be complete in April 2010

Additional information

The City of Lawrence and the Kansas Department of Transportation will be starting the reconstruction of the intersection at 2nd and Locust Street. This project has received $2,000,000.00 in federal stimulus funding (ARRA) and an additional $1,000,000.000 in state funding.
