AAB minutes: January 2000
Aviation Advisory Board
Minutes from Thurs., Jan. 20, 2000 Board Meeting
Board Members Present:
Rick Bryant, Chair Bob Newton
Dave Henry Jerry Sherman
Les Catlin Becky Wenger, LHS Student in Government
December Minutes were approved as presented through Bryant motion, Catlin second.
Airport Update:
Discussed the announcement of AS&T's departure to Salina. Accepted board member Dave Henry's resignation effective after the Feb. meeting. Henry is chief pilot and engineer for AS&T.
Rod Bremby told the board that several engineering bids had been received for the airport water/sewer project. His impression was the competition would lower the front-end costs for the project. He was still awaiting word on the Department of Commerce grant for funding assistance on this project.
T-Hangars
The Board discussed development of the new T-Hangar project and its impact on the existing buildings on the West side of the field, and the Board's desire to move forward with the project.
The Board also discussed, and re-affirmed its position, that a small number of these new hangars be equipped with electric doors, heaters, etc. and priced at prevailing market rates. The exact mix of styles and number of units was not established.
The Board also agreed that the privately-owned condo hangars on the West side were not part of this relocation but that the City direct staff to advise these tenants of our development intentions and probability of their location being eliminated.
Rod Bremby established a working date of February 22, 2000 to have a tentative project budget and ROI ready to share with the City Commission. According to Lloyd Hetrick, FBO, he has received a dozen signed letters-of-intents for hangar rental and has fielded several more phone calls from around Northeast Kansas for hangar space.
Del Richardson Memoriam
Bryant announced the death of Delbert Richardson, long-time Lawrence aviator and airport supporter, to the Board. Discussion was held as to appropriateness and viability of recognizing Richardson's contributions to the airport. Board was told the family had already established a scholarship fund through the Lawrence High School aviation club. Board members were asked to think of memorial ideas for February meeting.
Summer Chamber Mixer
Idea was presented on concept of hosting a chamber mixer in Summer 2000 as way of developing stronger relations with the Lawrence/Douglas County business community. Board was receptive to idea and wanted more information before proceeding. Bryant was instructed to research and report back.
