Maintaining the Local Drainage System

The City’s new permitting and licensing software, Enterprise Permitting & Licensing (EPL) is now live.

The Public Works Department, Stormwater Engineering Division has initiated a program of drainage system maintenance. Major drainage channels, ditches, and structures are periodically checked and maintained so that stoppage is minimized and the systems are allowed to flow freely. A drainage system that is clear and free of debris can convey stormwater more efficiently and can minimize flood damage to surrounding buildings and property.

Citizens can greatly assist in this effort by keeping catch basins in front of their property free of debris. By law, Chapter 9, Article 9: Stormwater Pollution Prevention of the City Code (PDF, XX KB) it is illegal to dump debris, grass clippings, and other waste materials into drainage ditches and catch basins. Please contact the Stormwater Engineering Division at (785) 832-3143 to report illegal dumping into the City’s drainage system or to obtain further information about the City’s drainage maintenance program.
