3rd & 4th Grade Program Topics

Nature Recycles (Spring to fall)
What do earthworms, cockroaches, vulture and ‘possums have in common? They are part of nature’s recycling crew. Investigate the critical role of bacteria, fungi and others in returning nutrients to the food chain.

Incredible Insects (Spring to fall)
Students will learn about the great diversity of insects in the world. They will use bug nets to collect and examine insects up close and study their diverse adaptations to the environments in which they are found.

Rainforest Treasures (Year Round)
Our only "indoor" field trip teaches about the rainforests as one of the richest and most important of the world's ecosystems. Students will learn about the adaptations of plants and animals to rainforest conditions. They will discover how many different products we use come from rainforests. Live animals and hands on activities.

Marvelous Migrations (Spring and Fall)
Animals are always on the move. This class examines all of the various reasons for migrations and the ways animals navigate migration. Birds, butterflies, reindeer and even dragonflies migrate. We will feature live animal migrators such as the red tail hawk and the turkey vulture. Students will play the great migration game.

How to schedule
  • Classes may be scheduled from Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • Field trips and indoor classes must be scheduled by calling the nature center directly. Registration for school programs are not handled by other Parks & Recreation facilities. Field trips are only offered at the Nature Center.

  • Please allow at least 2 weeks notice.

  • Group sizes of more than one class may be scheduled if the nature center has staff available. The classroom can accommodate up to 50 students. Additional space is available in the outdoor amphitheater. Please inform staff at the time of scheduling if any of your group requires special assistance.

  • All field trips are 2-2 1/2 hours in length. All classes attending field trips should be prepared to go outside with clothing appropriate to the weather.

  • Payment is due at the time of the program. Schools may send advance payment for indoor programs. Checks or money orders should be made payable to: Lawrence Parks and Recreation.
