1969 – Bob & Evelyn Senecal & Family

1969
Bob & Evelyn Senecal & Family
In 1969, the Senecal family, Bob, Evelyn and their three children, Michelle, Michael, and Matthew, moved from Iowa City, Iowa, to Lawrence. Bob and Evelyn had each received their doctorates from the University of Iowa in June and immediately moved into their newly built home at 1219 W. 28th Ct. in Lawrence. Bob accepted a position with the Board of Regents and Higher Education Commission. Upon the family’s arrival, a welcome reception was scheduled and the family dressed in the basement due to a tornado warning! Evelyn took a year’s sabbatical to prepare for the birth of their fourth child, Robert, and used the remainder of 1969 to organize Lawrence Meals on Wheels, Inc., which she founded.

The Senecals enjoyed Lawrence because it was a college community, much like Iowa City. Townsfolk were especially welcoming and friendly to us. The cul-de-sac at 28th Court was full of children and great neighbors. Broken Arrow Elementary School provided a fine education for Shelley and Mike as they entered school that fall. Scouts, 4-H, KU’s University Women’s Club, and school offered activities that gave our family the opportunity to become fully engaged in the life of Lawrence that year.
