U. S. Bank & its predecessor banks established
U. S. Bank and its predecessor banks have been serving Douglas County since 1865. In 1865, Lawrence National Bank started as the National Bank at the corner of 7th and Massachusetts streets. The bank was founded by Washington Hadley.

In 1877, First National Bank started as Merchants Bank at the comer of 8th and Massachusetts streets. The bank was founded by G. W. E. Griffith, Theodore Poehler and J. B. Watkins.

In 1886, Merchants Bank became Merchants National Bank, which then in 1925 acquired Citizens State Bank. In 1930, Merchants National Bank became First National Bank of Lawrence.

In 1970, First National Bank moved to the comer of 9th and Massachusetts streets. In 1989, First National Bank joined the Mid-American family of banks. In 1992, Lawrence National Bank joined First National Bank, a Mid-American Bank. In 1993, First National, a Mid-American Bank, became Mercantile Bank of Lawrence.

In 2000, Mercantile Bank of Lawrence changed its name to Firstar. In 2001, Firstar changed its name to U.S. Bank.
