LAWRENCE PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT ADVISORY BOARD
August 12, 2003

Board Members present: Chair Tom Bracciano, Vice Chair, Alice Ann Johnston, Sharon Spratt and Bill Penny. Staff Present: Fred DeVictor, Mark Hecker, Roger Steinbrock and Tim Laurent.

Meeting was called to order by Chair Bracciano. Minutes of the July 15th meeting were approved on a motion by Penny, 2nd by Spratt.

Board members commended staff on the recent girls fast pitch softball tournament, which had a very positive economic impact on the community.

DeVictor reported our RFP was out for detailed planning and design for the Sesquicentennial Plaza. Deadline for proposals is September 15th.

Steinbrock and Laurent explained how the new on-line registration was going for fall class and activity enrollment. Staff was happy that about a third of all enrollment to date was via computer on-line registration and one area, nature center activities, saw over 60% on-line enrollment.

Staff reported that 2004 fee increases for aquatics centers and golf were on the City Commission agenda tonight for consideration. No problems were anticipated since these were discusses during the budget process.

Hecker reported on a variety of park projects including filling and landscaping in Centennial Park at 6th and Rockledge, close of the indoor aquatic center for maintenance for two weeks beginning this weekend and resurfacing of gym floor at Holcom Park and East Lawrence Recreation Centers. Hecker reported he was working with neighborhoods to renovate Brook Creek and Clinton Parks. A public meeting will be held August 27th to gather input for Clinton Park renovations.

DeVictor reported Rita Hahn, wife of past LPRD employee Chris Hahn, and current Kansas Special Olympics Director, was killed in a bicycle accident recently in the KC metro area.
