(Lawrence, Ks) – The Lawrence and KU communities have the opportunity to weigh in on the planning of a coordinated transit system in Lawrence. The University of Kansas and the City of Lawrence invites everyone with an interest in public transportation in Lawrence to two open houses being held to gather input. Volunteers, students and staff will be on hand to gather ideas from the attendees on the future of public transportation in Lawrence.

The planning team working on a coordinated transit system is looking for input on six issues including route planning and scheduling, vehicle options, the mission of transit in the community, policies, service areas, and strengths and weaknesses of current transit systems.

The city and KU are working to create a coordinated or consolidated system that will bring together the Lawrence Transit System and KU on Wheels to provide improved service to citizens and students.

The first meeting will be from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9 in the Big XII Room of the Kansas Union, fifth floor, 1301 Jayhawk Boulevard. The Kansas Union is accessible by all KU on Wheels off campus routes and also on Lawrence Transit System route 8. Parking in the Mississippi Street parking garage will be free during the public meeting on Dec. 9. The parking garage is attached to the Kansas Union.

The second meeting will be from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11 at Lawrence Public Library auditorium, 707 Vermont. The library is on Lawrence Transit System routes 3, 4 and 6-Counter Clockwise and a two-block walk from routes 1, 4, 6-clockwise, 7 and 8 as well as a two-block walk from KU on Wheels route 25.

Both meetings are an open house format. Participants are invited to come and go anytime during the meeting. Attendees will be asked to complete worksheets to provide input and will be able to talk with team members about the issues.

Website to go live Wednesday
Individuals unable to attend the open houses may provide comment at www.getonthebuslawrence.org beginning Nov. 26. Beginning Dec. 9, individuals may complete the input survey at www.getonthebuslawrence.org. The deadline for completing the survey for initial input will be January 9, 2009. For additional information, contact Derek Meier, transportation coordinator, kuonwheels@ku.edu, (785) 864-4644 or Casey Toomay, interim public transit administrator at (785) 832-3409 or ctoomay@ci.lawrence.ks.us.
