EPA award given to city’s biosolids reuse program

The Environmental Protection Agency has recognized the City of Lawrence biosolids program with a first place award for the second time. The Biosolids Program is an award winner in the EPA’s 2008 National Clean Water Act Recognition Awards Program.  The award for exemplary biosolids management was also awarded to Lawrence in 2005. The award criteria only permits applications every two years from winning agencies.

“The staff of our biosolids program receives the credit for this national award,” said Dave Wagner, utilities department director.  “To be recognized by the EPA back to back acknowledges the staff that perform the daily tasks and our department’s commitment to continued improvement. Our staff and our community have done the work that earned this EPA award.”

The EPA selection for the Exemplary Biosolids Management Awards Program was based on Lawrence’s effective long-running recycling program involving the production and use of biosolids for both public distribution and land application. The Lawrence program was also the tenth in the country to be accepted into the National Biosolids Partnership’s EMS for Biosolids, which has since been expanded into all department activities with two management systems, ISO14001 for environmental management and OHSAS18001 for occupational health and safety.

Applications and nominations for the national award were recommended by EPA regions. The awards program provides national recognition and encourages public support of programs aimed at protecting the public's health and safety and the nation's water quality.

The award was presented yesterday during the Water Environment Federation's Technical Exposition and Conference in Chicago.
