(Lawrence, KS) – Current and future riders of the Lawrence Transit System now have one more tool to help them plan routes and get information about the bus system. The T is the first public transit system in Kansas to join Google Transit, a service that allows users to plan trips on public transportation systems throughout the world.
Here’s how it works. Users enter their origin and destination into the trip planner and receive three options for making a trip using the T system. The options presented may use different routes to complete the same trip or alternate times of day. Users may adjust the timeframe of the trip to better suit their schedules. In addition to step-by-step instructions, the results show the difference in cost between taking public transit and driving for the selected trip.
The trip planner is available through a link on the Lawrence Transit System web site, www.lawrencetransit.org. Riders should be aware that Google trip planning will not take into account bus reroutes, where the route has been temporarily changed for street repairs or other road closures. Riders can call the customer service line to confirm the planned trip before setting out on the T.
“This is an exciting new tool that will help more people try public transit in our community,” said Casey Toomay, Interim Public Transit Administrator. “If you’ve ever wondered how the bus might work for you, this is a great place to start.”
Currently, about 60 transit systems in the United States offer trip planning through Google Transit, and the site is expanding to locations in other countries.
“We are pleased to welcome the Lawrence Transit System to Google Transit,” said Jessica Wei, Strategic Partner Development Manager at Google. “This shows their commitment to innovating, serving their riders, and attracting new riders.”
The Lawrence Transit System travels throughout the community transporting people to work, school, medical appointments, and shopping. For assistance with trip planning, call 312-7054 or visit www.lawrencetransit.org to see a route map and timetable or try the Google Transit trip planner.
