(Lawrence, Ks) – Starting today, Lawrence will have expanded options for accessing public transportation throughout the community. That’s because a reciprocal agreement between the City of Lawrence and the University of Kansas goes into effect on Monday, Aug. 18, the first day of KU’s fall service.

The agreement allows KU students, faculty and staff to ride the T fixed-route buses for free by showing their KU Card. On the other hand, T riders can now use KU on Wheels buses for free by showing a valid T bus pass or transfer slip. The agreement was approved by both the KU Transit Commission and the Lawrence City Commission in June.

Jack Porter, Chair of the Department of Mathematics at KU, is one person who will benefit from the new system. “I have enjoyed riding the T bus to work at KU all summer,” Porter said. “I plan to continue during the school year.”

Like Jack Porter, many people taking advantage of the new reciprocal agreement are likely to be riding Route 8, which travels from downtown through the university campus to 31st and Iowa. However, all regular fixed routes of the T and KU on Wheels are open to the new program. Services excluded from the agreement are T Lift, JayLift, SafeBus, and SafeRide transportation services.

The university has a new KU Card this year, and starting Oct. 1, 2008, KU students, faculty and staff will need to show the new KU Card to ride T buses free. Until then, drivers will accept the current KU Card.

The Lawrence Transit System travels throughout the community transporting people to work, school, medical appointments, and shopping. For assistance with trip planning, call 312-7054 or visit www.lawrencetransit.org to see a route map and timetable.

For information about KU on Wheels, call 864-4644 or visit www.kuonwheels.ku.edu for a route map and timetable of university routes.
