1) Fall Arts and Crafts Festival exhibitors being accepted

LAWRENCE – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department’s Special Events Division is continuing to accept registrations for exhibitors at the 29th Annual Fall Arts and Crafts Festival being held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at South Park, 1141 Massachusetts Street.
 
The fee for exhibitors is $50 for a 10’x10’ outdoor space. Exhibitors will be responsible for providing display units. There will be table and fence panels available for rent on a first-come, first-serve basis. Electricity hookups are also available on a limited basis for an additional $20.
 
The entry deadline for exhibitors is 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3. Registrations forms may be obtained at any Parks and Recreation facility or online at www.lprd.org/classes.shtml.
 
Exhibitors will be allowed to set up starting at 7:30 a.m. the day of the festival. Items made from commercial kits or items of a commercial nature will not be accepted. Also, no commercial jewelry vendors will be accepted.

2) Swing into the school year with Eagle Bend golf special

LAWRENCE – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department’s Eagle Bend Golf Course and Learning Center, 1250 E. 902 Road, is offering a Welcome Back Special for area college students.
 
With a college student I.D., students can play an 18-hole round of golf with a cart for $27, any time, any day.  The welcome back golf special begins Wednesday, Aug. 13, and run through Monday, Sept. 1.

3) Dog days promotion at Eagle Bend

LAWRENCE – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department’s Eagle Bend Golf Course and Learning Center, 1250 E. 902 Road, has its Dog Days of Summer promotion through Thursday, Aug. 28.
 
The promotion includes:  18-holes of golf with cart for $27, after 12 p.m., Monday through Thursday only.

4) Swing Dance Workshop to be held

LAWRENCE – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department will hold a Swing Dance Workshop 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at the Community Building, Community Rooms 1 and 2, 115 W. 15th Street.
 
The Swing Dance Workshop is open to those 18 years old and up, and will teach the basic movements of today’s hottest dance craze.  The fee is $15 per person.

5) Galante to leave post

LAWRENCE – Cliff Galante, public transit administrator for the City of Lawrence, has resigned his post, taking a position with Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada where he will manage the fixed-route bus operations for the City of Las Vegas and surrounding communities.
 
Galante joined the City of Lawrence in July of 2005. He has overseen the growth of ridership, feasibility study of a merger with KU, assisted the launch of the KU Park and Ride, launched Carpool Connection and worked to secure federal and state funding for the system.
 
Prior to working with the City of Lawrence, Galante was a Senior Transit Planner/Program Administrator for St. Tammany Parish Government in Covington, Louisiana where he developed a demand response rural transit system and oversaw the design and construction of multiple park and ride facilities.
 
“Cliff’s knowledge of transit has benefited the Lawrence community and been vital to the operation of the T”, said City Manager David Corliss, said.  “I wish him the best in Las Vegas and his future endeavors.”
 
Galante had the following comments on his position as Transit Administrator for the City of Lawrence and his new position in Nevada. “I have enjoyed working for the City of Lawrence and serving the citizens. I am proud of my contribution to the Lawrence Transit System. The opportunity to work with a regional system in the country’s fastest growing city is truly the major leagues in my profession and an opportunity to move to the next level in transit.”
 
Galante’s last day with the city will be Aug. 22.
 
Transit staff and staff from the City Manager’s Office will assume Galante’s responsibilities on a temporary basis.

Bus Reroutes
 
Route 8 reroute
Jayhawk Boulevard and Mississippi Street will be closed over the summer for repairs to the tunnels on the KU campus. Route 8 will use Mississippi to Memorial Drive, and West Campus Road to Jayhawk Boulevard. Passengers who would normally catch the bus on Indiana Street, at the Kansas Union, or along Jayhawk Boulevard will need to move to another location. A good place to catch the bus will be on Mississippi at the pedestrian crossing linking the Spencer Museum of Art and the Kansas Union.
