Helmet fair provides free helmets
(Lawrence, Ks) - Bikes, scooters, roller blades and skateboards all require helmets and in Lawrence, youth can get a free helmet at the May 10 Helmet Fair. Volunteers will come together on Saturday, May 10 at Lawrence High School, 1901 Louisiana, to provide Lawrence youth with custom fitted helmets and lots of safety advice. Children must be present at the fair to receive a helmet and be fitted because proper fit is important to the effectiveness of a helmet. By wearing helmets while biking or on other wheels, serious head injuries can be reduced by as much as 85 percent.
From 10a.m. to noon, kids can get a helmet custom fitted, have their bikes repaired, ride on a street course, ride in bike rodeo, and learn about bike trail etiquette and swimming from experts. The event takes the work of firefighters, police officers and sheriff’s deputies as well as bike clubs, Safe Kids Coalition volunteers and most importantly funding from community sponsors.
The community is invited to this free event and will receive free drinks and hotdogs. If kids are unable to attend this year’s helmet fair, they may be fitted for a helmet at any Fire Medical Station.
Free rides on the T
On Saturday, May 10, the Lawrence Transit System will waive the fare for all riders. Parents and kids can utilize this free day of T service to get to and from the Helmet Fair at Lawrence High School. Route 7 goes by Lawrence High School on its route from downtown to 31st and Iowa.
Parents and kids can use Route 7 for direct access to Lawrence High School. Getting there on all other routes will require a transfer. Riders will find that drivers are excellent resources when learning to ride public transportation and are encouraged to ask for assistance.
To help plan your trip or learn more about the routes, call (785) 312-7054 or log on to www.lawrencetransit.org.
