1)   Summer swim lesson enrollment ongoing
 
(Lawrence, Ks.) – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department’s Aquatic Division will begin the summer session of the American Red Cross “Learn to Swim” lessons beginning Tuesday, Jun. 1.

Classes include: Parent and Child, designed for children 6 months old to 3 years old and classes Levels 1 through 6, which provide instruction familiarizing children to the water and refining stroke techniques.  If parents are not sure what level of swim lessons their child is ready for, they may set up a free skills evaluation.  Adult swim lessons are also available.  Cost is $40 per session for classes meeting four times a week and $20 for classes meeting on Saturdays.

To register for swim lessons, individuals can enroll online at
www.lprd.org or they can visit a Lawrence Parks and Recreation facility, including: the Community Building, 115 West 11th St.; East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 East 15th St.; Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 West 27th St.; Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Dr.; Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St.; the Administrative Offices, 947 New Hampshire St. or South Park Recreation Center, 1141 Massachusetts St.

2)   Summer camps keep kids active during summer months 
 
(Lawrence, Ks.) – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of experiences for children throughout the summer.
 
The long-running, Summer Playgrounds is being offered at five sites this summer. Sites include: Edgewood Park, Maple Lane and Miller Drive; Holcom Park, 27th Street and Lawrence Avenue; South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St. Broken Arrow Park, 2900 Louisiana St. and Sunflower Elementary School, 2521 Inverness Dr.
 
Summer Playgrounds is open to children ages 5 to 12 years old and runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. with options of two-week and four-week sessions throughout June and July. A variety of activities, games and trips are done throughout the camp. Cost is $140 for the four-week session and $80 for two-weekly sessions. Wet-N-Wild Aquatic Camp is being offered for children ages 5 to 12 years old at the Outdoor Aquatic Center, 727 Kentucky St. It is being held 8 a.m. to Noon Monday through Friday, July 19-23; July 26-30; Aug.  2-6. Cost is $60 for the camp. Participants will learn swimming techniques and have water safety instruction. Healthy snacks will be provided each day and on the last day of camp participants will celebrate with a pizza party. Snacks are included in the fee. Two-Day Golf Camp is offered at Eagle Bend Golf Course and Learning Center, 1250 E. 902 Rd., for beginner and advanced juniors, ages 11 to 17 years old. There is also a pee-wee camp for children ages 6 to 10 years old. The beginning junior camp will meet 8 to 10 a.m. and the pee wee camp will meet 10:30 -11:30 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday, June 2-3; June 16-17; July 7-8 and July 21-22. The advanced junior camp will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 1-2 and Sept. 15-16. Little Pop Stars Dance Camp is open to children ages 6 to 12 years old.  Camp will cover structured dance, free dance and explorative dance. Students will learn choreographed steps to today’s biggest Pop stars. The camp runs 8 to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday, June 7-11. The camp will be held at the Community Building, 115 W. 11th St. Cost is $60 for the camp. For more information, please contact Jo Ellis, recreation instruction supervisor, at (785) 832-7930.
 
Gymnastics Camp is being offered for children ages 6 to 12 years old at East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St. It will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday through Friday, June 1-4 and Monday through Friday, June 14-18 and July 12-16. It will also be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 7-11 and July 12-16. Cost is $50 for the June 1-4 camp and $60 for all other camp sessions. Tennis Camp is being offered for children 8 to 12 years old at Holcom Park tennis courts.  The camp runs 8:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday through Friday, June 1-4 and Monday through Thursday, June 21-24 and July 12-15.  Cost of the camp is $60.  For more information, please contact Jo Ellis, recreation instruction supervisor, at (785) 832-7930.
 
Prairie Park Nature Center is offering a host of Science Adventure Camps for children ages 6 to 13 years old. Each week has a different focus, which includes: wildlife, conservation, outdoor survival and extreme animals. Each camp will include fishing, canoeing and archery. There will also be live animal programs. Camps run weekly June 7 through Aug. 6 and are $80 per week.  The weekly topics are as followed: June 7 – Prairie Survivors; June 14 – Kid vs. Wild; June 21 – Most Extreme Animals; June 28 – Planet Explorers; July 5 – Eco-Energy Adventures; July 12 – Where the Wild Things Are; July 19 – Creature Quest; July 26 - Planet Savers and Aug. 2 – Naturalists In Training. Unified Day Camp has been developed for juniors, children ages 5 to 12 years old, and for seniors, those ages 13 to 21 years old. Camps are run weekly from June 7 through July 30. Cost of the camps are $45 weekly for either the junior or senior camp, except for the week of July 5, which is $36, running Tuesday through Thursday.  Both camps are fully integrated for youth with and without disabilities. Participants gain socialization, exercise and fun.  Trips to the Outdoor Aquatic Center and in-town field trips are also planned. This is not a one-on-one program. The junior camp is held at East Lawrence Recreation Center and the senior camp is held at the Community Building.  For more information, please contact Annette Deghand, special populations supervisor, at (785) 832-7920.
 
Other camps available include: Movie Makers, Crazy Chemistry/Junior Engineers, Video Game Design, Web Design Camp and Cheer and Spirit Camp, among others.
