1)   Compost sale closes early due to record distribution

(Lawrence, Ks.) – The City of Lawrence’s annual spring compost sale closed early in the afternoon on Friday, March 19 and will not reopen for the remainder of the weekend due to record compost distribution and forecasted snow this weekend.

“On Friday, around 3:00 p.m., we ran out of all compost available to the public,” said Kathy Richardson, waste reduction and recycling operations supervisor. “We saw more cars at this event and started with more compost than we have before. “

The city’s annual spring compost sale began on Thursday and residents took advantage of the nice weather to haul away their compost. There is a small amount of compost left at the site but it will be used for city projects this spring.

“The forecasted weather this weekend might have encouraged people to come down and get their compost early,” said Richardson.

Another compost sale will be held in the fall.

2)   31st Street maintenance postponed for next week; 6th Street will be targeted instead

(Lawrence, Ks.) – The City of Lawrence street maintenance division will alter their planned maintenance activities for next week. Originally, 31st Street from Ousdahl to Louisiana, was scheduled to be milled and overlaid. However, due to possible collective efforts between the city and county, this section of road will be postponed temporarily. Instead, sections of Sixth Street, from Folks Road to Monterey Way, will be targeted for localized milling and overlay patching. Single lane closures will be used but no detours are planned. Motorists may experience slow traffic in this area.

(Lawrence, Ks.) – The forecast for Friday night and Saturday includes the potential for snow throughout much of Douglas County. City of Lawrence street maintenance crews will resume 24-hour operations beginning at midnight Friday night and continue throughout the weekend. Depending on the type of precipitation received, roads will be treated accordingly.

The Winter Storm Warning for Douglas County is scheduled to last from 10 p.m. this evening through 7 a.m. Sunday morning.
