1)   City reprioritizes street maintenance funds to address immediate needs
(Lawrence, Ks.) – Last night, the City Commission reprioritized part of the 2010 Street Maintenance Program funding to address several streets in Lawrence that are in immediate need of repair from damage caused by winter weather conditions. The road repair work will begin this week and will continue through April. The road work will include a combination of milling the existing pavement, patching deteriorated areas and placing a multi-inch overlay on the roadway. A proposed schedule is available; work is subject to weather conditions.
  • March 11 to March 20: Crews will mill, patch and overlay Iowa Street from Yale Road to Irving Hill Overpass (north and southbound lanes).  Since school will be out of session next week for Spring Break, crews will also perform maintenance work on Louisiana Street from 19th to 23rd Street (north and southbound lanes).  Louisiana Street will be closed during the week of March 15 for construction; local traffic only will be allowed.
  • March 22 to 26: Crews will mill, patch and overlay West 31st Street (east and westbound lanes) from Ousdahl Road east to the city maintenance limits.
  • March 29 to April 2: Crews will mill, patch and overlay West 6th Street from Monterey Way to Folks Road (east and westbound lanes).
  • After April 5: Crews will mill, patch and overlay Kasold Drive from West 5th Terr. to Peterson Road (north and southbound lanes).
The outer northbound lane of Iowa Street from Yale Road to Irving Hill Overpass will be milled and overlaid this spring. Patching of potholes will occur immediately in this area but milling will not occur until after the City of Lawrence Utilities Department finishes a water main replacement project in this area.
Motorists may experience delays or slowed traffic during the construction. Single lane closures will be used in the affected areas and no detours are needed at this time, except for the Louisiana Street repairs. A map of the construction areas is available online at the city’s website.
City crews have been out in full force over the past several weeks patching potholes. Now that the weather is turning warmer, crews are able to use a patching mixture called “hot mix.” The advantage of using hot mix is that it lasts longer and the repairs should hold up better in the elements. This winter, city crews have patched a total of 10,256 potholes. In comparison, in 2009, crews patched a total of 12,898 potholes over the course of the year.
The city launched a new pothole reporting form that is specifically designed for mobile devices. The new form is easier to read on a mobile device and makes submitting a pothole repair request from a Smartphone or mobile device easier. The mobile pothole reporting form is available online at http://www.lawrenceks.org/mobile/pothole.html.   Please, do not use the form while driving.
Citizens can report potholes online at www.lawrenceks.org/public_works/pothole_report_form or call (785) 832-3456.

2)   Spring compost sale benefits Lawrence residents

(Lawrence, Ks) - The City of Lawrence announces the schedule for the Spring Compost Sale for Lawrence residents:

Thursday, March 18, 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Friday, March 19, 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Saturday, March 20, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (may close early if supply is depleted)

The compost sale will take place at the City’s Wood Recovery and Composting Facility, located at 1420 E. 11th Street, east of 11th and Haskell, over the railroad tracks.  Citizens may either load their own material or have it loaded by tractor into pickups and small trailers. The city cannot load trucks with ladder racks. The cost of the compost will be $10 per truckload (more for larger trucks or trailers) and free for all self-loaders.  Cash only, please. This compost is not intended for commercial applications, but rather for the citizens of Lawrence. Dump truck quantities are not allowed.

What is Compost?
Compost is a dark, crumbly, sweet smelling material, similar in appearance to the top layer of high quality soil.  It is made of organic materials that have been broken down into a stable form by the action of microorganisms.  Lawrence community compost is made from the weekly collection of residential yard trimmings, which includes grass, leaves, garden prunings, and small woody waste.  The materials are collected curbside from Lawrence households each Monday during the growing season and trucked directly to the City’s Wood Recovery and Composting Facility.  Once delivered to the facility, the organic materials are emptied from the trucks and loaded into a large tub grinder, which chops the materials into small pieces.  The ground materials are then placed into large windrows which are turned intermittently to achieve the optimum conditions for decomposition of the raw materials.

Benefits of Compost
Compost is the ideal material for improving lawn and garden soils.  It adds nutrients, organic matter, and builds soil structure.  Incorporate compost into garden and potting soils, or use it as a mulch or top dressing for lawns, flower beds or vegetable gardens.  Organic compost loosens soil for better root penetration, improves soil capacity to hold water, resists erosion, and adds essential nutrients to the soil.
