1) Enrollment in spring break camp programming on-going
(Lawrence, Ks.) – Kids, don’t be cooped up at home during spring break! Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of spring break camps guaranteed to be a fun time.
All camps will run from Monday, March 15 through Friday, March 19, unless otherwise noted.
The Gaming Academy is a new program for students 10 to 17 years old who love games. During the course, participants will be immersed into the world of 2-D and 3-D game design. The course offers students a variety of hands-on experience designing and building their very own games. The Gaming Academy is taught by staff from Youth Tech Inc, an interactive computer program that focuses on providing enrichment opportunities to students in the world of computers. The camp is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at South Park Recreation Center, 1141 Massachusetts St., and will conclude on Thursday, March 18. Cost to participate is $350. The Nature Division is holding Wildlife Camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St. Children seven to 12 years old will enjoy a fun-filled week of holding snakes, making friends with a tortoise, playing games, hiking and other fun activities. Flip out with Velocity Spring Break Camp! The staff at G-Force will offer several entertaining activities, supervised open gym time, movies, crafts and games. Don’t forget to bring a sack lunch, drink and snack. The camp is open to children five to 12 years old. It runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and costs $90. Spring Break Camp is offered by the Special Events Division from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Holcom Park, 2700 W. 27th St., and Edgewood Park, which is adjacent to East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St. Children five to 12 years old will be involved in a structured program, which involves field trips, special events, swimming, arts and crafts, movies and games. Cost is $62, except for additional fees that may apply with field trips. Deadline to register is Friday, March 12, at 6:30 p.m. For additional information, contact Duane Peterson, special events supervisor, at (785) 832-7949.
The Special Populations Division is offering Integrated Spring Break Camp from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St. The camp is fully integrated for those with and without disabilities. Children, ages five to 12 years old, will swim at the Indoor Aquatic Center, go on field trips, listen to speakers, see nature presentations, and participate in games, activities and arts and crafts. Participants need to bring a sack lunch and drink. Parents are encouraged to send attendants for children who need additional assistance. Cost is $62. Deadline to register is Monday, March 8. 2) DCABA Leagues near capacity
(Lawrence, Ks.) – The Douglas County Amateur Baseball Association sponsored by the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department’s Youth Sports Division has limited spots available in several of its leagues.
Team openings remain in the Under 8 and Under 10 leagues. There is one slot remaining for a team in the Under 12 league.
There are six slots remaining for teams in the Under 8 League, three in the American League and three in the National League. The Under 8 League features a coach-pitch league and a machine-pitch league.
There is also one team opening in both the American and National leagues in the Under 10 league.
The programs are organized for those wishing to be involved in competitive play.
For those wishing for a less competitive setting, the department offers baseball and softball leagues in recreational leagues.
Registration deadline for the Under 8 league is Monday, March 1, and the cost to participate is $110 per participant. For the Under 10 and Under 12 leagues, the deadline is Thursday, April 1, and the cost to participate is $1,400 per 12 member team.
