1) Public meetings set to discuss possible changes to transit routes
(Lawrence, Ks.) – The City of Lawrence is seeking public input on a set of recommendations that would alter several fixed routes with the existing transit system, starting in August 2010. The recommendations, which are part of a year-long study of ridership rates and usage of the system, will be presented at a series of open-house style meetings to be held throughout the community.
“We are looking to match service levels with demand,” said Robert Nugent, transit administrator. “Our goal is to improve the service for the entire community and utilize our resources most effectively.”
The recommendations include major changes to routes one through six in regards to routing and timing. Routes seven and 26 would see moderate changes to routing and timing. Most significantly, the proposal calls for eliminating traditional fixed route service in some areas and implementing a non-traditional service based on customer demand.
“Some of our routes have very limited demand at the moment,” said Nugent. “By switching to a non-traditional service that is based on reservations, we can offer curb-to-curb service to these areas and meet the demands of our customers.”
The recommendations also call for connection improvements on the west side of town to the KU Campus and Downtown.
A full listing of proposed transit service recommendations is available at www.lawrencetransit.org.
