Snow Update: Crews continue to treat roadways; plowing operations to begin later this evening
(Lawrence, Ks.) – At 4 a.m. this morning, city crews began working a 24-hour, round-the-clock operation in preparation for today’s snowfall. Crews treated roadways with a mixture of sand and salt throughout the morning hours and are now focused on keeping priority one (arterial) and priority two (collector) roadways clear for motorists. A map of the city’s priority routes is available online at http://www.lawrenceks.org/publicworks/pdf/SnowPlow_web.pdf.
Despite sand and salt treatments, the roadways are still very slick. You should exercise extreme caution when driving in the snow and slow down.
Starting mid-afternoon today, crews will begin plowing as needed on the priority streets. It is critical to keep the priority routes open and passable for motorists to be able to get to their neighborhoods. After the snow has stopped falling this evening, crews will continue to clear priority routes and begin plowing operations in residential neighborhoods.
On Thursday morning, the city has made preparations for additional help to clear roadways in residential areas. An outside contractor will bring in equipment to plow and remove snow from residential streets. The Utilities Department will assist the street maintenance division with plowing operations. The Parks and Recreation Department will focus on cleaning and clearing parks facilities and sidewalks in downtown Lawrence.
The city will man their street division phone line, (785) 832-3031, through midnight tonight and will resume manning this phone line at 6 a.m. on Thursday morning. Residents can call with questions regarding snow operations.
Tonight, winds are expected to increase and snow drifting is expected. Drifting snow will create dangerous driving conditions and difficulty in plowing.
As always, the city appreciates your patience and cooperation during snow operations. We will make every effort to plow roads quickly.
