Selection Process Overview

Subject to Change

This position requires persons with the ability to perform specialized duties under emergency conditions. Abilities will be evaluated by the following method.

  1. Applications for the position of Extra-Board Firefighter are now currently being accepted.
  2. Personnel and the Fire Department officers will review all applications during the Application Screening to ensure applications are complete and candidates meet the minimum qualifications.
  3. We will be using the IAFF/IAFC Candidate Physical Abilities Testing (CPAT). Candidates will need to have a valid CPAT test card dated no greater than 12 calendar months from the date of application closing. The CPAT test measures specific physiological parameters that have been shown to relate to on-duty job tasks of Firefighters.
  4. Applicants who have successfully completed the CPAT test standards, will be invited to participate in an oral interview board. The board consists of representatives from the Fire-Medical and Personnel offices. Background and reference checks will begin for those successfully passing the oral interview board.
  5. A selected group of final candidates will be invited to participate in an interview with the Chief and Deputy Chief of the department.
  6. Final candidates selected to fill the Extra-Board openings will be required to successfully complete the post-offer physical and drug screening and sign a non-smoking agreement.
  7. The remaining final candidates will be placed on an eligibility list for a period of one year.
