Emergency Medical Services

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical began in 1996 when Douglas County Ambulance Service merged with the Lawrence Fire Department. Since then, the department has provided a first-rate pre-hospital emergency patient care and transportation service within the community.

The department provides the sole advanced life support ambulance transportation service in Douglas County, KS including the City of Lawrence. The department’s goal is to provide EMS response to within 6 minutes or less 80% of the time. Currently, we staff six medic units 365/24/7. Staffing consists of one EMT-Intermediate and one EMT-Paramedic (KS MICT) per unit.

Paramedic Training

To become a paramedic, department firefighters must apply for the position, and if accepted, begin a year-long training program. Currently, the department sends its paramedic students to Kansas City Kansas Community College. After graduation and successful completion of National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic, the individual applies for a Kansas Mobile Intensive Care Technician – Paramedic license.

Our members then enter into an “EMS Mentoring” program that evaluates their department specific knowledge of medical treatment protocols, equipment, and policies. After all requirements are met, they meet with the department Medical Director for final approval.
