RE:

Variable Frequency Drive for Wastewater Pump Station 5B Pump #1

Background

Pump Station 5B receives wastewater from a large portion of the collections system and pumps it to the Kaw River Wastewater Treatment Plant. Pump functionality is critical during high flows and rain events.

Recent Event

A recent lightning strike has operationally compromised Pump Station 5B’s pump #1 and its related variable frequency drive (VFD). Staff has determined the damaged VFD is not repairable, with replacement required for pumping reliability. Staff has negotiated a quote of $61,505.00 for the VFD, startup services, and five-year warranty from Logic, Inc., the local supplier for the Department’s specified standard VFDs from manufacturer ABB.

Concurrently, damaged pump #1 is under evaluation for possible repair by manufacturer Douglas Pump. Following evaluation, depending on the cost, staff will follow up as appropriate for Commission consideration.

Project Funding

Purchase will be funded from the Utilities Operations and Maintenance Budget.

Action

Authorize the sole-source purchase of one ABB Variable Frequency Drive from Logic, Inc. for $61,505.00 for the Kaw Wastewater Treatment Plant Pump Station 5B pump #1.
