Animal Housing Facilities

 

Vice-Mayor Soden requested a list of the animal service businesses that would be classified as animal housing under staff’s recommended fire code amendment (NFPA 150). In developing its recommendations, City staff made a genuine effort to engage all animal service businesses and other interested stakeholders that are not included in this list, including the Kansas Humane Society and the Douglas County Veterinary Medical Association.

 

Staff’s recommendation is based on national standards and was developed with the objective of improving fire protection at animal facilities without creating an inequitable cost burden on the business owners. The recommendation includes a threshold of 3,000 square feet for sprinkling requirements in order to avoid a requirement that would be cost prohibitive for smaller businesses. The majority of business owners that provided feedback over the past several months were receptive to staff’s recommendation. The City does not maintain data on the square footage of each business facility, but a survey was conducted in June that included a request for information on each animal business’ size. Some business owners volunteered that information and those sizes are provided in the list below.
