Agenda Items 6/23/2015: Traffic Safety Commission, No Parking on 26th Street and on Atchison Avenue |
Background
At the May 4, 2015 Traffic Safety Commission meeting, the Commission heard a request to establish NO PARKING along one side of 26th Street and along one side of Atchison Avenue. Both streets are classified as “local” streets in a residential area; 26th Street is paved approximately 26 feet wide and Atchison Avenue is paved approximately 30 feet wide. Parking is currently permitted along both sides of 26th Street and along both sides of Atchison Avenue. It should be noted that restricting parking can have an unintended consequence of increasing the speed of traffic (see map of area and meeting materials).
Traffic Safety Commission Action
At the Traffic Safety Commission meeting, seven (7) members of the public addressed the Commission, generally opposed to no parking on 26th Street, but, in support of no parking on Atchison Avenue after traffic calming is implemented. It was noted that some parking is needed on the streets and that parking provides some traffic calming. The Commission, on a unanimous vote of 8-0, recommended denying the request to establish NO PARKING along one side of 26th Street and along one side of Atchison Avenue.
Action Request
It is recommended that the City Commission concur with the recommendation of the Traffic Safety Commission to deny the request to establish NO PARKING along one side of 26th Street and along one side of Atchison Avenue.
