RE:

Regional Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Architecture and Strategic Deployment Plan

Background

The Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and the City of Lawrence hired Iteris in the fall of 2014 to update the region’s 2008 Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Architecture. The development of the Lawrence-Douglas County Regional ITS Architecture and Deployment Plan was led by the MPO with assistance and input provided by a number of stakeholders in the Lawrence-Douglas County Region.

ITS is the use of information technologies to meet transportation system needs. In other words, it is using technology to share information that can be used to improve transportation efficiency and safety. This ITS Architecture plan will serve as the guide to provide both institutional and technical communication and coordination so that our region’s multimodal transport system is well served by the technology and people who operate and maintain that system.  The plan meets the requirements needed to maintain the MPO’s compliance with current ITS program standards set by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for development of architecture and strategic plans as well as the Federal Transit Administration’s National ITS Architecture Policy on Transit Projects.

A list of recommended ITS projects for the Lawrence-Douglas County Region was developed through input from the regional ITS stakeholders. Stakeholders grouped projects into timeframes for deployment based on priority, dependence on other projects, technology, and feasibility. For more information visit the project website at: https://secure.iteris.com/share/LDC/ or view the ITS Executive Summary online at: http://www.lawrenceks.org/assets/mpo/pdf/ITS_summary.pdf.
