CITY MANAGER’S REPORT

Week ending May 1, 2015

Draft Airport Environmental Assessment Study available for review

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires an Environmental Assessment Study to be conducted for projects submitted in the 5-year Airport Capital Improvement Plan (attached).  The City hired Airport Development Group (ADG) in 2014 to complete this study.  The study is now ready (DRAFT) for public review.  The FAA process includes advertising in local media (newspaper) that the study is available and if someone desires to have a public hearing then they must request it in writing.  If no request is received, then the study is finalized. If a request is received, then a public hearing will be held and a court reporter will document the hearing and the transcript will become part of the report.

The report is available to view at the Airport and in Public Works office at City Hall or can be viewed at:  http://www.lawrenceks.org/airport or:

Cultural Plan Community Meetings Scheduled

The city hosted several meetings in March with local artists, arts organizations, creative sector businesses, and other community stakeholders, to start the process of developing the city’s Cultural Plan. Now, we’re seeking input from residents on a variety of issues surrounding the development of the plan. The city wants to make sure that issues important to Lawrencians are reflected in the Cultural Plan. As part of the planning efforts, the city’s consultants want residents to provide feedback and be a part of the conversation that will eventually help craft the city’s Cultural Plan. Citizens with an interest in the arts, performing arts, history, and culture in Lawrence are invited to attend. Multiple options for input are available next week for residents, including two community meetings. Each meeting will be facilitated in the same way. The public is welcome and invited to attend.

At these community meetings, the consultants will present general information about the Cultural Planning process and solicit feedback from residents on what the community’s vision is for the arts and cultural amenities, and development of the creative sector in Lawrence.

·         Community Meeting #1 - Wednesday, May 6 , Jayhawk Room, Fire Station #5, 1911 Stewart Ave, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

·         Community Meeting #2 - Saturday, May 9, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., City Commission Room, City Hall, 6 East 6th Street

Additionally, the Cultural Plan Steering Committee Meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 6, in the City Commission Room, City Hall, 6 East 6th Street, from 3:30 – 5 p.m.

The City of Lawrence was recently awarded a grant from the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission to complete a city-wide cultural plan. The City of Lawrence has engaged the team of Christine Harris Connections and Creative Community Builders to complete a city-wide cultural plan for Lawrence. The development of a city-wide cultural plan was one of the key recommendations of the city's Cultural District Task Force report, delivered in late 2013.
