Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

WHEREAS:   Community Action Agencies were created when the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 was signed into law; and

 

WHEREAS:   The East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corporation (ECKAN) was established in 1966; and

 

WHEREAS:   ECKAN has made essential contributions to individuals and families in Lawrence by providing them with innovative and cost-effective programs such as rent and utility assistance, transitional housing case management, food pantry for all Douglas County residents, weatherization services, and early childhood education; and

 

WHEREAS:   Individuals and families on limited income continue to need opportunities to improve their lives and their living conditions, thus ensuring that all citizens are able to live in dignity; and

 

WHEREAS:   The Douglas County poverty rate is nineteen percent, and 151 residents in Douglas County are living in poverty; and

 

WHEREAS:   The City of Lawrence and ECKAN have worked together to meet the needs of our most vulnerable citizens.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Lawrence, Kansas does hereby proclaim the month of May, 2015 as

 

“community action month”
