Fair Housing Month Poster Contest 2015 |
Background
At the February 19, 2015 meeting of the Human Relations Commission, the Commission directed staff to coordinate a first ever poster contest in recognition of April as Fair Housing Month. A goal of the competition was to raise awareness of our local and federal fair housing laws among Lawrence school children and their families. Teaching materials were also provided to explain how fair housing laws impact our quality of life and the protections they offer.
A subcommittee of commissioners, staff, and our community partners in the contest – USD 497 and the Lawrence Douglas County Housing Authority worked to establish a theme of: “Lawrence: Celebrating Diverse Neighborhoods”. The contest was open to all kindergarten through 12th grade students.
Over 80 entries were received. Finalists were displayed at the Lawrence Public Library from April 5 to April 14, 2015.
