Agenda Items 3/31/2015: Traffic Safety Commission, 15-Minute Parking on the north side of 6th Street, east of Mississippi Street. |
Background
At the February 2, 2015 Traffic Safety Commission meeting, the Commission heard a request to establish No Parking along the north side of 6th Street for approximately 50 feet east of Mississippi Street. Recessed parking is currently permitted along the north side of 6th Street between Mississippi Street and Indiana Street. There has been one (1) reported crash at this intersection during the past three (3) years involving southbound and westbound vehicles.
Traffic Safety Commission Action
At the Traffic Safety Commission meeting, three (3) members of the public addressed the Commission in support of the request and letters from 15 individuals in support of the request were provided. It was noted that vehicles parked in this area obstruct the drivers view of traffic approaching from the east. The manager of the adjacent business indicated that area is needed for older clients to provide a short walk to the door, but, he would like at least 15-minute parking there. The Commission felt that parking there was a problem, but, would like to try something less restrictive than no parking. The Commission, on a unanimous vote of 7-0, recommended establishing a 15-MINUTE PARKING ZONE, for 50 feet in the recessed parking area on the north side of 6th Street, east of Mississippi Street.
Action Request
It should be noted that short term parking zones are not generally actively enforced by police officers or parking control officers, but, are usually enforced on a complaint basis.
It is recommended that the City Commission concur with the recommendation of the Traffic Safety Commission and establish a 15-MINUTE PARKING ZONE, for 50 feet in the recessed parking area on the north side of 6th Street, east of Mississippi Street.
