RE:	2015 Downtown Lawrence, Inc. - Annual Sidewalk Sale

The city has received a Street Event request from Downtown Lawrence, Inc. (DLI) and a request for exclusive use of the downtown sidewalks along Massachusetts Street from 6^th Street to 11^th Street, on July 16, 2015, from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., to hold its annual downtown sidewalk sale. The city has mailed notification of the City Commission consideration of this item to properties located adjacent to Massachusetts Street.

Last year’s sidewalk sale was approved following this same format. After the completion of the event, City staff met with DLI staff and discussed how the event worked out. It was noted that no issues arose as a result of exclusive access to the right-a-way, in fact the event was much more organized and there were actually less issues from previous years in terms of a maintained pedestrian access on the sidewalks. Staff is in support of this same process for this year’s sidewalk sale. 

In addition, Parks and Recreation, Public Works, Fire/Medical, Lawrence Transit, and the Chamber all have reviewed this permit with no issues.

ACTIONS

Approve Street Event Permit for DLI’s annual downtown sidewalk sale on July 16, 2015 from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and approve the exclusive use of the public sidewalk adjacent to both sides of Massachusetts Street, from 6^th Street to 11^th Street, on July 16, 2015, from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
