Agenda Items 1/13/2015: Traffic Safety Commission, Traffic Calming on Lyon Street between 7th Street and 9th Street

Background

At the November 3, 2014 Traffic Safety Commission meeting, the Commission heard a request for TRAFFIC CALMING on Lyon Street between 7th Street and 9th Street. Lyon Street is classified as a “collector” street in a residential area and is paved approximately 20 feet wide. The speed limit on Lyon Street is 30mph in accordance with State Law. Traffic data obtained August 7-8, 2014 found approximately 140-350 vehicles in a 24-hour period and an 85th percentile speed of approximately 29.78-40.63mph. The City’s Policy permits Traffic Calming on a “collector” street if the 85th percentile speed is 5mph or greater over the speed limit.

Traffic Safety Commission Action

At the Traffic Safety Commission meeting, no one from the public addressed the Commission concerning this item. Commissioners did note that the 85th percentile speed was well above the minimum required. The Commission recommended, on a vote of 6-0, to recommend TRAFFIC CALMING on Lyon Street between 7th Street and 9th Street.

Funding

Although no funding is currently available for traffic calming, this project will be prioritized and added to the list of approved projects until funding is available.

Action Request

It is recommended that the City Commission concur with the recommendation of the Traffic Safety Commission, if appropriate.
