Subject: BRADY QUESTION

Mayor Amyx:

The Northeast Kansas Chapter of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence is conducting a survey of community leaders statewide on a question concerning gun policy. We have received responses from 53 mayors of the 60 most populous cities in the state, and would appreciate Lawrence's participation.

    Here's the question:

Do you believe background checks on gun sales should be expanded to include private sales at gun shows and over the Internet?

Currently background checks only are conducted by licensed gun dealers. Many private sales at gun shows and over the Internet are not subject to background checks, which are conducted by the FBI within a minute or two to determine if the buyer can legally buy a firearm. Such people as felons, domestic abusers and those who have renounced their U.S. citizenship cannot legally own a gun.

We intend to issue a press release later this week on the results of the survey. If a bill on the issue is introduced in the state Legislature this year, we would make lawmakers aware of what we learned from the survey.

Our national organization's Website is: bradycampaign.org.

Our chapter works to support candidate who back common sense gun laws. We also work to get good gun laws adopted. and we conduct gun safety instruction program.

I hope this provides the information you need. Please let me know if you need additional information.
